Kazatomprom and CGNPC invested $ 110 million in fuel production for nuclear power plants

The new plant enables to load the capacity of Ulba Metallurgical Plant

Ulba-TVS plant was launched to produce fuel assemblies (FA) - engineering structures designed to obtain thermal energy in a nuclear reactor. This was reported by the press service of Kazatomprom.

Ulba-TVS LLP is a Kazakhstan-Chinese joint venture established by UMP JSC with a 51% share (subsidiary of NAC Kazatomprom JSC) and CGNPC-URC with a 49% share (subsidiary of China General Nuclear Power Corporation).

“Our country is interested in the production and marketing of uranium products of high value added value. The successful implementation of the Kazatomprom project with foreign partners ensured entry into a limited circle of states-suppliers of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants,” said Almasadam Satkaliyev, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna JSC.

“The project is a good example of successful multilateral cooperation of the world's leading companies in the nuclear industry. The organization of high-tech production opens up new opportunities for our country to further develop cooperation with other states in the atomic sphere,” said Mazhit Sharipov, CEO of Kazatomprom.

One fuel assembly contains 264 fuel elements. Fuel rods are long metal rods, in the cavity of which fuel pellets are placed, which are produced by UMP JSC.

Thus, the new plant will allow, along with its own activities, to load the capacity of Ulba Metallurgical Plant.

CGN has been cooperating with NAC Kazatomprom JSC in the uranium mining, natural uranium trade and tablet production since 2006. The implementation of the joint project for the construction of Ulba-TVS LLP plant enables to take the partnership to a historically new level.
