The relief of the territory of the district basically has mountainous character (Akshatau range, Tarbagatai range), the southern part is both hilly and flat. The climate is extremely continental, with cold winters, hot summers, average temperature in January - 17-19° С, in July 20-22° С. Annual precipitation level is 250-400 mm. It snows in the end of October or at the beginning of November and lays till April. The district has such rivers, as: Ayagoz, Karasu and others. The Ayagoz river begins in the northern slopes of the Tarbagatai Range and flows into the Balkhash lake. The Ayagoz river is 492 km. long, with a catchment area of 15,7 thousand km2. Large tributaries: Balikty, Naryn, Batpakty, Aigiz, Kuraily, Tansik and others.
The history of Ayagoz district dates back to the middle of XVIII century. Most of the fierce fighting in a liberation struggle of the Kazakh people against dzhungars took place here in the territory of Ayagoz district – the border of Dzhungar and Kazakh Khanates. One of known battles with dzhungars in the Ayagoz river took place in Spring of 1718. In 1754 in the place of Mamyrsu (Sergiopol) the peace treaty was signed between Abylai Khan and China.
The district was named after the Ayagoz river which flows through its territory. In its turn, the Ayagoz river was named after the Turkic tribe named “ay” and ancient Turkic “uguz” - river, that means «the river of the ay tribe». According to the popular national ethymology, the name of the river and town comes from the Turkic “ay” – “beautiful” and “goz” – “eyes”.
Ayagoz district is the native land of batyrs and akyns. Long ago, Abai Kunanbayev, Chokan Valikhanov, P.Semyenov-Tyan-Shansky, G.Potanin, A.Yanushkevich visited the district. In the territory of the district there are 18 historic monuments, among them the most known are: the monument of national architecture “Kozy Korpesh and Bayan-sulu”, the highest clay mausoleum of Kazakhstan – Baltabek-kazhi Mausoleum, Barrak Sultan Mausoleum.

The district occupies the southwest of East Kazakhstan region. In the west it borders on Karaganda region, in the south - Almaty region, in the north - Abai and Zharma districts of East Kazakhstan region, in the east – Urjar and Tarbagatai districts of East Kazakhstan region.

As at December 1, 2017 the population of the district consisted of 73038 people. Economically active population - 32109 people, including employed population - 30475 people, unemployed - 1634 people.
Now the system of secondary education comprises 40 state comprehensive schools and 10 kindergartens. Including 35 secondary schools and 5 primary schools with12514 children in them. All schools are computerized.
There are 18 family outpatient clinics, 27 medical aid stations, 4 hospitals in the district. As of September 1, 2016 - 155 doctors, 516 nurses work in medical institutions
The industry occupies a considerable share in the economy of the district.
The industrial output in January-November, 2017 made up KZT 62358,0 million compared with the same period of last year accounted for 258,7 per cent (2016 – KZT 24102,1 million). Index of actual volume accounted for 179,7 per cent. Including the mining industry for KZT 34340,5 million or 28,7 times higher compared with the same period of last year (2016 - KZT 1196,3 million), processing industry for KZT 27227,0 million or accounted for 123,4 per cent compared with the same period of last year (2016 - KZT 22068,8 million).

According to the expert reviews of the population, conducted by the regional Statistics Administration economically active population in Ayagoz district made up 36120 persons, employed population - 34425 persons, unemployed - 1695 persons. The unemployment level on the district made up 5,0 %.

Ayagoz district is considered one of large in Kazakhstan (49558,03 sq. km.) which makes Ayagoz the third largest district in the Republic. The district is rich with national traditions and legends. The bus station is located next to the railway station.
